Excursion: Nairobi National Park

Park fees are paid by you to KWS, not on this site: payment is cashless through the KWS eCitizen/KWSPay platform (M-Pesa, Visa or MasterCard). Carry your national ID or passport; without proof of status the non-resident rate applies. Fees are set by KWS and may change, so please confirm them on the KWS website.

• Shuttle: an organiser-coordinated shuttle from the conference venue (vehicle, fuel, driver and vehicle entry fee). The fare is paid directly to the organisers, not on this site; details follow before the trip.
• Own arrangement: participants using their own or a hired vehicle pay the KWS vehicle entry fee separately at the gate.

The programme stays flexible and follows the preferences participants give when booking.

• The park is open daily from 06:00 to 18:00, and all visitors must leave by closing time unless KWS has authorised an overnight stay.
• Early morning (06:00 to 10:00) is the best window for game viewing: predators are most active, animals are feeding and the light is ideal for photography. Late afternoon (15:30 to 18:00) is the second-best window; at midday most animals rest in the shade.
• Late November falls in the short rains: showers are more likely in the afternoon and some tracks may be muddy, so a morning start and high-clearance safari vehicles are recommended.
• A half-day drive of three to four hours covers the main circuits.

• Stay inside the vehicle with the doors closed, except at designated areas such as the picnic sites, the ranger-escorted walk at Hippo Pools and the Nairobi Safari Walk boardwalks.
• Keep to the 40 km/h (25 mph) speed limit and to established roads and trails; off-road driving is prohibited and speeding attracts penalties.
• Keep a safe distance from animals, never feed them, avoid loud noise and do not hoot.
• Carry all litter out of the park.
• Drones are not allowed without written authorisation from KWS and the aviation authorities; personal photography is permitted when it does not disturb wildlife or other visitors.
• Entry tickets are cashless and valid for a single entry: you cannot re-enter on the same ticket after leaving.
• Always follow the directions of KWS rangers and your driver-guide.

• Your national ID or passport: it determines your fee category, and visitors without proof of status pay the non-resident rate.
• Neutral-coloured clothing with a warm layer (early mornings are cool), a light rain jacket, a hat, sunglasses and closed shoes.
• Sunscreen, drinking water, a light snack, a camera and binoculars if you have them.

Nairobi National Park covers 117 km² and is home to over 100 mammal species and more than 400 bird species. Four of the Big Five live here (lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino, but not elephant), along with giraffe, zebra, hippo and plains game, all against the backdrop of the Nairobi skyline. Visits to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage are booked and paid for separately.
