Abstract
As climate change alters aquatic habitats, tracking elemental budgets - specifically carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulfur - becomes critical for managing ecosystem health and developing climate-smart aquaculture. Understanding organic carbon and nitrogen distributions within marine sediments and coastal biotas provides insights into blue carbon sequestration and the recovery rates of impacted aquatic habitats. Concurrently, the growth of regional aquaculture demands rigorous quality control of feed formulations to maintain nutritional efficiency while minimizing environmental pollution.
This presentation highlights the utility of the FlashSmart Elemental Analyzer as a versatile tool for driving sustainable aquatic resource management. Utilizing the modified Dumas combustion method, the system delivers rapid, precise, and simultaneous CHNS determination across a diverse range of sample matrices, including marine sediments, marine macroalgae (seaweeds), macroinvertebrates, and aquaculture feeds.
We examine the dual-purpose application of this technology in environmental research and aquaculture support. In ecological monitoring, stable C:N and C:S ratios derived from sediment and organic tissues serve as indicators of organic pollution, ecosystem stress, and blue carbon storage capacity. In aquaculture, high-throughput determination of total nitrogen allows for rapid estimation of crude protein content in local feed alternatives, ensuring optimal feed-conversion ratios and lowering metabolic nitrogen excretion into water bodies. Ultimately, integrating elemental analysis into laboratory workflows supplies the definitive biogeochemical data required to back sustainable mariculture and resilient coastal management strategies.
