Abstract

Climate changes is one of the largest hurdles that Africa’s inland faces, this directly threatens the livelihood of the people who depend on natural resources, especially the individuals who rely on the ocean, stability of the ecosystem example being mangroves, forests, coastal areas, rivers and lakes. However these ecosystems are prone to be polluted, destructed, their ability to adapt is limited and overexploitation of resources. Across the continent the erratic rainfall pattern, the rise in sea level, drought, floods, increase in global temperature and ocean acidification are becoming a norm thus changing the functioning of the ecosystem. Within this theme of Climate Resilience and Ecosystem Health, this study will examine the impacts of climate change on African regional biodiversity and ecosystem change and also identifying strategies that can strengthen resilience and promote sustainable ecosystem management.

The study also contributes to the ongoing discussion on climate resilience and ecosystem by providing insights into the relationship between climate change and human wellbeing and it underscores the urgency of adopting ecosystem based adaptation measures and sustainable resource management practices to safeguard inland and marine ecosystems against future climate risks. The study takes place in Kwale County as the area of study. The methodology used includes both the theoretical and literature review whereby there will be identification of degradation of ecosystem and the main stakeholders that suffer loss under climate change.

The results show that involving the community, combination of local knowledge with scientific knowledge, investment in research and innovation and creation of public awareness about climate change can build an effective resilience in climate. The main solutions involved are nature based which are initiative that restore the ecosystem, restoration of mangrove, climate smart agriculture, sustainable fisheries management and protection of marine areas and the government is required to collaborate with all the institutions that are accountable.
