Abstract

Many research institutions across Africa are currently hit by a massive growth in both scientific data and research outputs in aquatic and environmental sciences. This reality has posed both opportunities and challenges to the institutions. However, the effective management of this research information remains vital in informed decision-making, policy formulation, and sustainable aquatic resource governance. This paper seeks to showcase how Artificial Intelligence can be integrated into research information management and dissemination within aquatic and marine research institutions to facilitate knowledge accessibility, visibility, and digital innovation in Africa.

This study examines emerging technologies powered by AI. These AI technologies include, but are not limited to, machine learning, metadata generation, and animations. The three technologies will be vital in research, information management, and dissemination. The paper further highlights the role of AI in strengthening digital libraries, institutional online repositories, and platforms. This is possible through automated content organization, faster retrieval of scientific information, and enhanced discoverability of research information resources.

Making use of experience from Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), the paper discusses opportunities for integrating AI tools in monitoring publications, managing biodiversity and ecosystem data, and supporting evidence-based research information dissemination. The study also addresses challenges associated with digital infrastructure, data quality, technical capacity, ethical considerations, and policy frameworks affecting AI adoption in research environments.

The paper concludes that integrating AI in research information management and dissemination can significantly improve efficiency, collaboration, and visibility of African aquatic science research while supporting innovation and sustainable ecosystem management. Strengthening institutional capacity, digital partnerships, and regional collaboration will be essential in advancing AI-driven knowledge systems for Africa’s inland and marine ecosystems.
