Abstract

Globally, aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food production sectors, with significant expansion in Kenya in recent years. Social media and digital communication tools are increasingly penetrating agricultural communities, offering new avenues for knowledge exchange and market linkages. This review examines how social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, and others are influencing the growth of aquaculture in Kenya. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, synthesizing peer-reviewed studies, reports, and case studies on the use of social media in the transformation aquaculture in Kenya. Key findings indicate that digital platforms facilitate knowledge sharing among fish farmers, enhance access to markets and inputs, and strengthen extension services through real-time communication. Notably, social networks have enabled farmers to learn best practices, advertise produce, and connect with buyers, contributing to productivity and income improvements. However, challenges included the spread of misinformation, unequal access due to digital divides, and concerns about information overload and privacy. The review highlights the need for improved digital literacy, supportive policies, and credible content moderation while leveraging on future prospects of social media for sustainable aquaculture development. Social media presents transformative opportunities for Kenya’s aquaculture sector, but strategic efforts in capacity building and governance are required to mitigate risks and ensure strategic policy decisions to effectively support the country’s blue economy goals.
